Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to the Foundation Stage Unit at Stanhope Primary School.

Once your child has entered the foundation Unit it is the beginning of their school life. Your involvement in their education is very important throughout their school years; we look forward to developing a strong partnership with you. We hope that time spent with us will be both happy and rewarding.

Our early years unit at Stanhope primary school provides a safe and stimulating environment for children of all abilities.

Our nursery provides 3 hour of early years education for children with parents given the choice of morning or afternoon sessions. The nursery can take up to 26 children in each session.

We share our foundation stage unit with the reception class, with the children benefitting from a purpose built foundation stage unit that provides both an indoor and outdoor learning environment based on children’s interests and developmentally appropriate activities.

The aim of the foundation stage is to make the learning experience both enjoyable and purposeful for children as they engage in meaningful activities that promote their personal social and emotional development, physical development and communication and language.

Our children follow a structured daily routine with opportunities to work as a whole class, in small groups and independently.

During independent work time children take responsibility for their own learning through a ‘plan, do, review’ process. Children are encouraged to become increasingly independent and confident with a positive attitude towards learning, in an environment, and with staff, who promote mutual respect and positive relationships.

Throughout the early years the phonics programme “Read, Write, Inc.” is used to develop reading skills, while in mathematics we follow the “Little Big Math’s” programme to ensure continuity and progression for all children.

Parents are invited to events in school throughout the year, to learn more about their child’s progress, meet with the staff and participate in activities and celebrations.
